Introduction of activity | This workshop aims at raising students’ audience awareness in contextualized situations and demonstrating how language changes as a result. This includes a wide variety of workplace communication needs, such as email, letters, speeches, proposals, reports, etc. A specific focus will be put on the difference in formality in language use across written and spoken contexts. Students will get to experience the performances of HSU students giving a simulated pitch presentation for a business they are proposing for the University campus. |

Introduction to Instructor(s) | Mr. Rhett YU Lecturer Department of English Mr. Yu obtained an MA in English (Applied English Linguistics) from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His research interests include corpus linguistics, lexico-semantics, and Hong Kong learner English. Mr. Yu is an advocate of using corpus-based or corpus-informed materials in the classroom, and in doing so raising students’ awareness of natural and authentic language, thus enhancing their language learning experience. |
